The common sense of marriage equality in a New York Minute
Okay, it’s really more like 7 and a half minutes. But that’s still pretty fast…
I was traveling yesterday when the Marriage Equality vote went down in New York, so I missed the debate. I assumed it was more of the same rhetoric we’ve been hearing in other parts of the country with the wrong result.
But State Senator Diane Savino summed up the issue in an amazingly smart, heartfelt, common-sense statement that cuts to the core of what is really at stake with marriage equality.
In my view, her floor speech was remarkable for being so passionately reasonable.
If only Senator Savino’s colleagues had listened a little more closely.
I believe some day we’ll look back and wonder how there could even have been a question on this issue. Just like I expect 20 years from now, people under 40 will wonder what the big deal was about electing a black president.
But for now, Senator Savino’s eloquent message should be required viewing for legislators who are on the fence on equality. And for progressive leaders who are looking for a way to move forward on this issue.

I sent her a contribution online right after I watched this. I bet lots of other people did too.

good point bill. it would be interesting to see how much money Sen. Savino raised in the few days after that video hit YouTube.
